Moses Mayes has a funk sound that reminds me a little of 70s mixed with a martini lounge vibe. Since 1999, Mayes has been touring with one of the best jazz/funk live performances out there. Mayes has shared the stage with legends Herbie Hancock and James Brown and his CDs have sold thousands. His most recent stuff combines jazz, house and pop into something you can dance to regardless of the nightclub you’re in. With an album that has won the 2007 WCMA for Best Instrumental, Moses is sure to continue pumping out great music. Check him out in Winnipeg on December 27th at the Pyramid Cabaret.

The Waking Eyes were among the bands busking for change on October 2 in Toronto. Here they are outside the Horseshoe Tavern performing a cover of The Weakerthans – One Great City. All money raised went to War Child Canada. Other bands included Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven, and Die Mannequin.

The Waking Eyes are Rusty Matyas, Joey Penner, Matt Peters and Steve Senkiw. The group formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 2001 as more of a musical collective and recording project than a band proper. From the beginning they have refused to be one-dimensional and predictable, with the only constant in their sound coming from their distinct songwriting style. Their debut album Combing The Clouds is a rich tapestry of neo-psychedelic and orchestral pop recorded in various basements, garages and bedrooms in Manitoba. It was released to critical acclaim on Endearing Records in 2002.

Soon after they signed with Coalition Records and recorded the rock album, Video Sound, in Toronto. After extensive touring over the next couple of years and finally solidifying their membership, The Waking Eyes went home to work on something new. From the fall of 2005 until the summer of 2007 they wrote and recorded far too many songs to count. After the dust had settled they were left with a 3-CD set of B-sides and rarities (Operation Walter Prychodko), two side projects (Rusty’s Terrier and Matt’s Royal Canoe) and the real prize – a full length album called Holding On To Whatever It Is. The album was recorded and co-produced by John Paul Peters in Winnipeg and will surely be something completely unexpected. The group is currently preparing for the release of this new record in the coming summer. Matt and Rusty contribute their voices and accompany them with melodies and chords played on guitars and keyboards. Steve counts from 1 to 4, sometimes to 6, and hits things precisely with sticks and feet. Joey makes his bass sound like a soul singer.

They distill rock ‘n’ roll, punk and country into their heady house-rockin’ punch. Give them a stage, any stage and they’ll put on the best show they can for whoever’s there.
Wintermitts are Lise Monique, David Thomas Manzl, Shane McMillan, Swann Barrat and Trevor Dunnett, a force of unique musical talent you cannot help but love. Wintermitts have a bilingual set list and a full length album “Cascadia Fault”. The recording took place in the wet Vancouver Winter of 06/07. They recorded all the music on this lovely little compact disc huddled in the dry warmth of Shane’s living room, the Lise Monique Manor, the Sullivan family basement and producer Christian Chaumont’s bedroom.

Wintermitts have opened for such acts as Julie Doiron, You Say Party! We Say Die! and Laura Barrett amongst other great local Vancouver talent. The ‘mitts self released a full album July 2007, co headlined a cross Canada tour with Portico in August 2007, including a stop at Sappy Fest in Sackville NB.

Fall 2008, the five ‘mitts, will be putting out a little cd with much love called “Heirloom”. The cd produced by Shawn Cole (You Say Party! We Say Die) and co-produced by Futcher (the be good tanyas) has songs that will make you shake that ass of yours and maybe cry a little while you’re doing that. mom approved, we can’t forget that one. fuck there are even handclaps.

Taking its name from a religious tract, The Burning Hell has been slithering around in the muck in one form or another since the dawn of the millennium. Fronted by the moderately agoraphobic songwriter and occasional history teacher Mathias Kom on electric ukulele, The Burning Hell currently features between one and twelve people, depending on the night.

The variable lineup promises a very different show every time: sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, sometimes rock, sometimes roll. Always folk, never anti. Quirky? Maybe. Cute? Never.

The latest Burning Hell album, ‘Happy Birthday’, celebrates the beauty of age, the joys of decay, the possibility of dating after death, and the inevitable repetition of mistakes. Combining happy little melodies and depressing Old World fatalism, the music of The Burning Hell is sure to make you smile and want to give up.

(and if you want a good laugh, check out these boys doing an impromptu cover of Outkast’s ‘Hey Ya’)

DJ Pump is one of Canada’s best kept secrets. Also, coincidentally, one of Canada’s Best Kept Secret’s. He really redefines Turntablism and what it means to be a party DJ by focusing heavily on the overall musical composition when he’s mixing, scratching, and creating beat juggles or blending beats. His worldwide performances have earned him tonnes of respect amongst his peers as one of the most funkiest and versatile DJs around.

DJ Pump is one of the few Calgary bred DJs to receive global recognition from many of the world’s most elite hip-hop/versatile DJ’s. To this day he is the only Calgarian to represent Canada in the DMC World Championships.

He’s on the move lately, setting up tours all across Canada. If you’re interested in checking out DJ Pump, take a look at his upcoming show list:

Since first hitting the stage in 2006, Winnipeg’s The Details have hardly gone a day without seeing each other. The Details quickly established themselves as a hard-working band by releasing their EP ‘Marching Sound’ in November of that year and their full-length ‘Draw a Distance. Draw a Border.’ in September 2007.

The Details, not content to sit around, have played at the 2006 Western Canadian Music Awards, New Music West 2007, North By Northeast 2007, Pop Montreal 2007, both Canadian Music Week 2007 & 2008, and South By Southwest 2008. They have shared the stage with a diverse group of great bands such as Stars (Arts & Crafts), Constantines (Arts & Crafts), You Say Party! We Say Die! (Paper Bag), The Meligrove Band (V2/Murderecords), Mother Mother (Last Gang), Great Lake Swimmers (Nettwerk), and many many more. Much Music also graced the streets of Winnipeg to conduct an interview with The Details which aired nationally.

From Halifax to Vancouver or vice-versa, The Details can’t seem to see enough of Canada. They have spent the better part of the last two years crossing Canada supporting their various releases.

2008 has already been a busy year for The Details who cracked the top 100 on the CMJ charts in their second week at 74. They also had a song placed on NBC’s new series ‘Lipstick Jungle’.

The Details spent the spring of 2008 once again crossing Canada followed by several festival showcases including the Jazz Winnipeg festival and a second year at Calgary’s acclaimed Sled Island festival.

Though they don’t have any upcoming dates right now, be sure to check back often with TransCanada Radio for upcoming concert dates and to find out what these awesome Canadian artists are up to!
