The Left: Bigger than the sum of its parts

e The Left group photo

The Left – Pretty Things

The Left is consistently making heads turn in the Canadian music scene. It’s rare to find a group with a live show that is a good representation of its studio albums, but The Left doesn’t disappoint. The group’s live performances leave listeners with a lasting impression and the best of what rock can be – elegant storytelling, passionate vocals, melodic guitars and a rock-solid rhythm section. The young group has been touted as “Vancouver’s next Nickelback” by the press, and much like the Juno-award winning rockers, their hard work stands out just as much as their immense talent.

Coming off a victory at Vancouver’s 99.3 The Fox Seeds Competition in 2005, The Left ventured out on a 53-date Canadian Tour, garnering opening slots for major-label heavyweights Hedley, The Trews, and Tal Bachman. This exposure has solidified airplay in major radio markets, including Vancouver, Toronto and Winnipeg and even Japan on iRadio and NHK. With nearly 300 shows under their belt and 3 albums to date, the boys say they have just started to scratch the surface of the bans potential.

Cory Woodward new album to be released nation wide, July 15th/08

Cory Woodward – Slipping Away

On the surface, you’d think Cory Woodward is too young to be writing the songs he does. He shouldn’t have felt the pain he’s felt; his voice shouldn’t be as worn. No, not at his age. But with his gruff voice and familiar song structure, he seems to have been around for years and destined for hyperbole-filled comparisons to Waits and Springsteen.

Dan Mangan, Mercury Lounge Ottawa

Tuesday June 10th was Dan Mangan’s second time around at the Mercury Lounge last Tuesday. For the Merc to be close to capacity on a Tuesday night, this show had to be more “than your average going out to encourage a friend and his band” performance.

Said the Whale warmed up the crowd and then it was time for Dan. Joined by friends John Walsh on stand up bass and Andrew McCormack on drums, playing songs from the album “ postcards and daydreaming. They gave me the chills more than once. Dan’s voice is like a beautiful black hole that you just want to fall a sleep in with a smile and dream about his songs. He had the hole crown smiling.

My musical background is mostly electronic but when the music is good I can recognize it. He has such a simplistic approach to music. All he needs is himself and a guitar to deliver beautiful music. Check out this interview and live performance to see for yourself.

He will be playing more shows this summer, so here are some dates and other artists that he will be performing with.

UPCOMING SHOWS:
14 Jun 2008 22:00 Savannah Room (NXNE) Toronto, Ontario
25 Jun 2008 20:00 Vancouver Jazz Festival @ The Media Club Vancouver, British Columbia
30 Jul 2008 19:00 The Living Room NYC, New York

Ride the Wave with Said the Whale |Vancouver|

A nice easy going vibe from Vancouver made it self heard when Said The Whale dropped in the Mercury Lounge Ottawa Tuesday, June 10th. Delivering a clean and truthful set of songs from there new album “Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia”, and some even newer unreleased stuff that I loved even more!

With all the thousands of bands taking part of the web community, Youtube.ca invited Said the Whales to there launch party last November.

Said the Whale are presently on a cross Canada tour. They will be playing with an amazing list of artists including; Hey Ocean, Dan Mangan, Matthew Barber, Lotus Child and The Hermit. Check your city to catch one of their shows, you should definitely hit it! S.T.W also have some slick T-shirts, I got my self one.

As a bonus, I’ve included a clip of their show at the Merc and an unbelieveable experience that happened outside just after their show.In this video a local Ottawa ByWard Market vagabond, was so moved by the name of the band “SAID THE WHALE”, that he reached deep into his bag to show the band members that he had a “SAVE THE WHALES” pin! In actuality it was a “SAID THE WHALE” tour pin from Vancouver.

Update: Elizabeth Shepherd’s releases ‘Parkdale’

The Making of Parkdale

In case you don’t remember this beautiful, talented lady as well as you should, here’s a refresher.

Elizabeth Shepherd pushes the boundaries of what is considered conventional jazz, all the while creating a sound completely her own. From London to Tokyo, Elizabeth has captivated audiences and critics on both sides of the pond. Her Juno nominated debut album Start To Move continues to receive critical acclaim, and was voted the Top 3 Jazz Albums of the Year by the listeners of the Gilles Peterson show on BBC Radio 1 UK in 2006. Dan Mangan in profile: Lyrical ruminations

At the tender age of seven, Dan Mangan’s first goal was to memorize and recite Abbey Road’s side ‘B’. At 17, it was to record his first EP. Now, at 24, it’s to meander into the stereo and hometown of music lovers worldwide. With the recent release of his debut full-length, Postcards and Daydreaming, five recently completed tours of the US, UK and Australia – including a feature in the Brit-tastemaker magazine, NME – and let’s not forget the umpteen festival performances (SXSW, MusExpo, The Great Escape, NXNE, etc.), one could definitely say he’s off to a good start.
For your listening pleasure, here’s a great track “So Much For Everyone” – my personal favourite – off of Dan’s album Postcards and Daydreaming:

Amy Honey in profile: Honky-tonk heroine

Amy Honey is a Canadian singer/songwriter/rocker/honky-tonk heroine. Born and raised in the wilds of rural Nova Scotia (West Chezzetcook, to be specific), she moved to Vancouver in 1996, and set about turning the town on it’s ear.

In 1998, she joined the ladyrockin’ band, Clover Honey, and together they won CiTR’s 1999 Shindig battle of the bands competition, put out their critically acclaimed Go Horse Go album and Continue reading ‘Amy Honey in profile: Honky-tonk heroine’

Julie Ann Bertram in profile: Finding her place in the world

Julie Ann Bertram is a very talented indie folk musician from Toronto, Ontario. But to do her justice, I can’t peg her down to any one location really — this woman is everywhere! She’s really made a life based around artistry, taking in every beautiful outcome along the way. At a young age she left university (where she was taking theatre studies), packed her bags and moved to Vancouver where she began a monumental journey. Armed with a tent and a guitar, she took off hitchhiking along the West Coast crossing into the U.S., Mexico and back again. Though many days were tough and nearly unbearable, alone in strange woods and stranger cities, she really honed an artistry – melding her crafts of writing, music and performance art into busking on street corners Continue reading ‘Julie Ann Bertram in profile: Finding her place in the world’
