His 4th album, Feed the Animals, is out right now and if you pay over $10, then you are pre-ordering a physical copy of the CD, which will be out later. Broken Social Scene, the Toronto-born indie rock group, are coming back to Canada from an International tour on November 27th. The band was formed in 1999 by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, and since then, they’ve won a Juno Award and toured all over the world. If you’re in Toronto then, check them out and enjoy their grand orchestrations featuring guitars, horns, woodwinds, and violins, unusual song structures, and an experimental, and sometimes chaotic production style.

Sheltered in Sound (Toronto, ON)

Toronto’s Sheltered in Sound, the musical guise of Sean Nilsson, plays starkly intimate 21st century independent folk music. The economy of words, mixed with acoustic guitar, harmonica, and looped percussion, has garnered comparison to Hayden, Mark Kozelek and Nebraska-era Springsteen. Sheltered in Sound has received national Canadian airplay on CBC Radio 2, and also airplay support from U.S. college radio.

The Waking Eyes @ LiVE Lounge (Ottawa) Nov 5

The Waking Eyes were among the bands busking for change on October 2 in Toronto. Here they are outside the Horseshoe Tavern performing a cover of The Weakerthans – One Great City. All money raised went to War Child Canada. Other bands included Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven, and Die Mannequin.

The Waking Eyes are Rusty Matyas, Joey Penner, Matt Peters and Steve Senkiw. The group formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 2001 as more of a musical collective and recording project than a band proper. From the beginning they have refused to be one-dimensional and predictable, with the only constant in their sound coming from their distinct songwriting style. Their debut album Combing The Clouds is a rich tapestry of neo-psychedelic and orchestral pop recorded in various basements, garages and bedrooms in Manitoba. It was released to critical acclaim on Endearing Records in 2002.

Kobo Town: Toronto-based calypso roots reggae wonders!

Behind the scenes w/ Kobo Town, Toronto's Calypso Revival Band

Kobo Town is a Toronto-based group whose music draws its inspiration from traditional calypso, roots reggae and dub poetry. Named after the vibrant and turbulent neighbourhood in old Port-of-Spain where calypso was born, the group strives to recover the social conscience, satirical storytelling and strong acoustic/organic rhythms that characterized Trinidadian music in the past.

Kobo Town doesn’t currently have any upcoming shows, but stay tuned to TransCanada Radio – we’ll keep you posted!

Brian Borcherdt @ Phoenix (Toronto) Oct 1

The Remains of Brian Borcherdt – Can’t Stop Lovin’ You

Brian Borcherdt’s newest album, Coyotes, was recorded by his long time friend (and one of my all-time personal favourite artist) Jose Contreras of the super mega awesome band By Divine Right. While on a break from Holy Fuck’s tour schedule Brian performed a handful of recently written songs in Jose’s living room. Little else was added to the guitar and vocal, maintaining the songs’ intimate and delicate atmosphere. The album’s textural paper sleeve features original artwork by James Mejia, perfectly complimenting the haunting tone of these seven songs.

Nick Zubeck @ Tranzac (Toronto) Nov 8

Part of Dove’s Campaign for beauty. Song: “The Lucky One” by Nick Zubeck

An inimitable stalwart of the Toronto music scene, Nick Zubeck is a versatile and accomplished guitarist, producer, and multi-intrumentalist whose talents have led him to play with Great Lake Swimmers (briefly, on bass), The Lavender Gloom (now defunct), Polmo Polpo (guitar and lap steel), and Barzin (currently). As a songwriter, he has released two albums under his own name (2002’s “A Meek Spectacle” and 2003’s “Hiding Out and Laying Low”), both of which were marked by his unequaled use of lush delicately-layered textures and unconventional song structures.

Run With The Kittens @ Jimmy Jazz (Guelph) Oct 3

Quite possibly the hardest working original rock and roll band in Toronto, Run With The Kittens have played almost three hundred shows in their four year career. Their weekly Tuesday night residency at the historic Cameron House has become a must see event, promising a fresh, entertaining night of great music, week after week. The stories of them rolling into towns throughout Ontario in their big black bus are becoming more commonplace. Winning new fans with each gig is a testament to the contagious energy of the band.
