Title: Team Canada
Location: Quebec City
Link out: Click here
Date: 2008-12-05

Team Canada are DJ Grandtheft from Montreal and DJ D.R.one. The two began their careers together throwing rip-roaring parties on the East Coast and released their first album together in 2004 called “Classic Material Volume 1″. They’ve gotten so big that even DJ Z-Trip played one of their tracks, without a shoutout I must add. Recently, the group signed with DJ AM’s management team in LA joining a strong team of AM, A-Trak, Steve Aoki, Eli Escobar, Stretch Armstrong, DJ Spider, DJ Fashen, Kevin Scott, DJ Scene and Pase Rock. Team Canada are signing their own DJs too with Jr. Flo (Toronto) Illo (Ottawa) Pump (Calgary) and Hedspin (Vancouver), forming their own crew/management agency: The Eh! Team. Check out them out in Quebec City on December 5th where they’ll be playing club bangers like the one embedded below.

Kid Koala is on the road supporting his newest album on Ninja Tune, Your Mom’s Favorite DJ. On this record he shows that his chosen means of..the turntable) is used not as a way of showing that he can do faster crabs than anyone else, but as a way of telling stories. Although there is the romance, silent movie comedy and swing that your mother may well smile at and even shake her booty to, the enthralling deftness and complexity you’d expect from Kid Koala is also here – woven together with classic hip hop beats, breaks and generous swathes of heavy guitars.

Back in 1996, Kid Koala became the first North American artist signed to UK label Ninja Tune. In the years that followed Kid Koala released a string of remixes and toured North America with fellow Ninja artists: Coldcut, DJ Food and DJ Vadim. But it was not long before his skill, innovation, and performance style led him to attract attention from those outside the club community. In 1998, he was invited to join Money Mark’s band, and then went on the road to open for the Beastie Boys on their Hello Nasty world tour.

In 2000, Ninja Tune released Kid Koala’s debut album Carpal Tunnel Syndrome which received international praise by the press for having defied expectation. The album featured a video game and a 32-page comic illustrated by Kid Koala himself. Following the release of the album, Kid Koala toured extensively in North America and Europe as a member of groups such as Deltron 3030, Lovage, Bullfrog and on his own, opening for some of his favorite artists, Radiohead and Bjork.

While on the road, Kid Koala kept busy with pen to paper, illustrating a 350-page book called “Nufonia Must Fall” which was accompanied by a soundtrack that he composed on the piano. Shortly after the release of this book came the release of his second album, Some of My Best Friends are DJs complete with a 50-page comic book and mini chess game. This album was supported by a cabaret-style tour known as The Short Attention Span Theatre, which featured 3 DJs on 8 turntables, a slide show and a bingo game among other quirky surprises. Following this tour, Kid Koala performed DJ sets in Australia, Asia, Europe, Russia, North America and South America, all the while working on a new book and a very eccentric puppet show.

Adam & The Amethysts – The Return

In between performing with groups Miracle Fortress and Telefauna, Amethyst Amulet was handcrafted with the tools Adam Waito had available in his Montreal apartment. In the spirit of long-lost concept albums of the past, Amethyst Amulet tells a story through unified musical and lyrical themes, yet remains, essentially, a collection of good pop songs about love and small-town remembrance, earnestly but playfully composed and humbly realized at home in the big city.

Live, Waito is joined by drummer Nathan Ward and guitarist Jessie Stein, both from Miracle Fortress, as well as long-time collaborator, pianist Katherine Peacock of Telefauna. With sweet vocal harmonies, rock guitars, fluttering keys, and creative percussive arrangements, Adam & the Amethysts perform compelling live renditions of the songs of Amethyst Amulet that sparkle and thump.

Not unlike a large percentage of active musicians in every big city, Waito grew up in a small town. Waito’s supernatural lo-fi opus, Amethyst Amulet, is unified by an overarching focus on the remote Northern Ontario town of Thunder Bay where he grew up (one of the rare locations to mine amethyst in Canada). In its 13 tracks that traverse a great deal of sonic and musical territory–from tender Neil Youngian balladry, to reverb-drenched ’60s pop, to fuzzy ’90s-nostalgic indie rock–the listener can trace a narrative about revisiting the people, places, and events of the small towns that shape the identities of many urbanites, that we wear and carry with us to work, to school, and on tour with rock bands.

12 Jul 2008 21:00 CD LAUNCH @ Casa Del Popolo w/ Tune Yards, Mussaver Montreal, Quebec
25 Jul 2008 20:00 Babylon w/ Think About Life, Miracle Fortress Ottawa, Ontario

Toronto based band Tokyo Police Club have made their cover of The Rentals’ “Friends Of P” available to stream and download at friendsofp.org. The song was previously only available on the bonus disc to the U.K. version of Elephant Shell, but the band have teamed up with the Lupus Foundation Of America to give more people a chance to hear it. All money raised from donations made on the site will go to lupus research. The first 50 people who donate $15 or more will receive a free “Friends Of P” tote bag.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body attacks and destroys its own tissue and cells. It has no cure, can be fatal, and can damage the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver, skin, lungs, brain and other body parts.

Tokyo Police Club recently remixed The Coast’s “Tightrope” for a seven-inch single that’s out now on Toronto’s Magnificent Sevens Records.

Tokyo Police Club are currently in Europe, but will return to Canada for these July festival dates:

July 8 Ottawa, ON @ Lebreton Flats (Ottawa Bluesfest)
July 9 Quebec City, QC @ Espace 400 — La Grande Scene
July 19 Halifax, NS @ Garrison Grounds on Citadel Hill (Summersonic Festival)
July 20 Toronto, ON @ Fort York (Rogers Picnic)
(ChartAttack, June 2008)
