Hexes & Ohs @ Velvet Underground (Toronto) Oct 18

Hexes & Ohs "H-H-Highschool"

The story behind the Montreal-based electropop duo begins with a pair of highschool sweethearts and spans a decade of couplehood, musical projects and everything in between. 2005 saw the release of their debut album Goodbye Friend, Welcome Lover on Noise Factory Records, the first full-length effort Edmund and Heidi had ever attempted. There were no distractions, just the two of them in their apartment strumming guitars, singing songs, turning knobs and pressing record.

Off the International Radar @ O Patro Vys (Toronto) Oct 3

137 Niagara could be called the house that rock built, not only because the three members of Off the International Radar who lived there filled its nooks and crannies with droney space rock and projected weirdly lit images onto the sweat soaked basement walls during crammed house parties but also because on moving day, after they removed the final piece of musical equipment from the basement, the entire back wall collapsed. Apparently the Farfisa organ was load-bearing.

Contrived releases new cd ‘blank, blank, blank’ October 28

Contrived is a 5 piece rock band with principal members from Wintersleep and Holy Fuck. Lending a hand at the mix is Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Super Furry Animals). Tight, pulsing rhythms and a tapestry of guitars lay the foundation for warm and welcoming vocal melodies.

Their new cd blank, blank, blank will be released October 28th, 2008.

Brian Borcherdt @ Phoenix (Toronto) Oct 1

The Remains of Brian Borcherdt – Can’t Stop Lovin’ You

Brian Borcherdt’s newest album, Coyotes, was recorded by his long time friend (and one of my all-time personal favourite artist) Jose Contreras of the super mega awesome band By Divine Right. While on a break from Holy Fuck’s tour schedule Brian performed a handful of recently written songs in Jose’s living room. Little else was added to the guitar and vocal, maintaining the songs’ intimate and delicate atmosphere. The album’s textural paper sleeve features original artwork by James Mejia, perfectly complimenting the haunting tone of these seven songs.

With the release of their fourth album, Calling Out (2008), the FemBots have set off in yet another direction while in many ways returning to their beginnings. Born out of improvisation and experimentation, Calling Out sees the FemBots once more stretching themselves musically to produce an album that is daring yet accessible.

Nick Zubeck @ Tranzac (Toronto) Nov 8

Part of Dove’s Campaign for beauty. Song: “The Lucky One” by Nick Zubeck

An inimitable stalwart of the Toronto music scene, Nick Zubeck is a versatile and accomplished guitarist, producer, and multi-intrumentalist whose talents have led him to play with Great Lake Swimmers (briefly, on bass), The Lavender Gloom (now defunct), Polmo Polpo (guitar and lap steel), and Barzin (currently). As a songwriter, he has released two albums under his own name (2002’s “A Meek Spectacle” and 2003’s “Hiding Out and Laying Low”), both of which were marked by his unequaled use of lush delicately-layered textures and unconventional song structures.

Danny Torrence @ Unity (Montreal) Sept 27

While keeping in step with his own brand of dark and sexy House, Montreal DJ Danny Torrence believes that all good records should be mixed regardless of the genre. It is this instilled belief that allows Danny to uplift, inspire and rock the dance floor like few others. Danny’s artistic vision is exceedingly broad, touching on many different styles including deep house, tribal and techno. All of these elements combined are what makes Danny’s fans describe him as “powerful and eclectic”.
