Title: Alfa Rococo Location: Club Soda, Montreal Link out: Click here Date: 2008-11-29
Alfa Rococo are Justine Laberge and David Bussieres, a Quebecois duo that put out their first album in Spring of 2007. Their music and lyrics reflect their personality: colorful and poetic. They sound like Manu Chao if he had his girlfriend play in his band. They’re sure to put on a good show and if you’re feeling like dancing, I suggest checking them out at Club Soda on Saturday November 29th in Montreal.
Title: Mark Berube and The Patriotic Few Location: Montreal Link out: Click here Date: 2008-11-16
Mark Berube is half Quebecois and half Manitoban. In this regard, he truly exemplifies the Canadian culture that affects his music. On top of that, his cultural influences are diversified by a stint living in Swaziland while he was young. He currently lives in Montreal where he takes inspiration from Bob Dylan, Keith Jarrett, Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela and Nina Simone. His music is described as rare and raw folk and he consistently delivers engaging and lively performances. Check out Mark Berube at La Divian Orange in Montreal on Saturday, November 16th.
Title: Komodo Dubs Location: Society for Arts and Technology, Montreal Link out: Click here Date: 2008-11-22
Komodo is a Montreal-based DJ who plays fast dub and includes an Australian didgeridoo in his sets. He also uses a Turkish ney and bendir. I’m not even sure what that is but I’m sure it sounds awesome. His live performances feature heavy beats and bass that sound great in a packed night club. Check him out at SAT (Society for Arts and Technology) in Montreal on Saturday November 22nd. Tickets are $10 presale, $15 at the door. His album is also available here.
Title: Girl Talk Location: Toronto Link out: Click here Date: 2008-11-12
Girl Talk is the club kid superstar that brought us all those insane mashups featuring more artists than could fit on an iPod. His 4th album, Feed the Animals, is out right now and if you pay over $10, then you are pre-ordering a physical copy of the CD, which will be out later. I’m looking forward to when he touches down in Toronto on November 12th and then follows up in Montreal the next day.

Kid Koala will be ringing in the holidays in Vancouver on December 22nd and 23rd at Biltmore Cabaret in Vancouver Canada. Check out the Montreal turntable demi-god scratch the hell out of his famous collection of odd trumpet samplings and classic movie dialogue. Should be a sweet show!
If you rearrange the letters of Leif Vollebekk’s name you get the word Lieblekklove, the secret language he sings in. With the soulful and skewed folk styles of Vollebekk, it doesn’t really matter if you decipher the words as long as you’re ready to be carried away on a buttery cloud.
Check him out at the Mercury Lounge right here in Ottawa on October 23rd!
