Ashtray Rock is a place. It is also a landmark album in the career of celebrated Canadian singer/songwriter Joel Plaskett and his excellent Emergency band. A “mini rock opera,” Ashtray Rock is an exuberant romp through the imagination and a celebration of everything important about growing up: love, longing, loyalty, betrayal, youthful exuberance and, above all, MUSIC.

Pick up on of Joel Plaskett’s albums at CDBaby:

This hugely anticipated follow-up to the Make A Little Noise DVD – with its hit single “Nowhere With You” – is hard on the heels of a year that saw Joel (and the band) hit the crest of Canadian airwaves. Top 10 at hot A/C, 1 on CBC Radio 3, two ECMA wins (Male Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year), a Juno nomination (Songwriter of the Year), SRO dates in the U.S., U.K., Australia and for the entire Canadian tour, a sensational show with symphony Nova Scotia at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax and two sold out shows at the Marquee Club over the New Year’s weekend.

This year’s ECMAs saw three more wins … Single of the Year for “Nowhere With You,” DVD of the Year for “Make A Little Noise”, and Songwriter of the Year.

Ashtray Rock, was released in Canada the first week in April to rave reviews from media and audiences alike. The band has been busy this year with a 6 week tour of Australia with Aussie champs, Augie March, followed by a sold out Canadian tour. Summer plans include festivals and special events across the country.

The Joel Plaskett Emergency is, without doubt, one of Canada’s best live acts and Plaskett is no stranger to performing. As a member of seminal Halifax indie heroes Thrush Hermit, Joel toured north America, went through an American major label deal (Electra), had the most-played album on Canadian college radio (2000’s Clayton Park), all while still a teenager.

Subsequent solo work and material recorded with his Emergency band has resulted in major recognition in the Canadian industry. Juno nominations for the band’s Down At the Khyber (Best New Artist), “Truthfully Truthfully,” the first release on Maplemusic recordings (Alternative Album of the Year) and Songwriter of the Year (for solo effort, La De Da) attest to the fact that Joel is a major talent.
