Fred Everything has over 12 years in the music business and over 100 productions to his credit. Born in Hull and raised in Quebec City, Fred has had a long career DJ’ing various venues around Canada. In 2003, Fred won best Electronic Artist at The Mimi’s award in Montreal. He now lives in Montreal, after having lived in San Francisco and working with Moulton Studios, where he’s working on his label’s 10th release. To hear his latest stuff, check him out at the Mercury Lounge, where he’ll be playing after elodieO on Thursday, November 20th.

Tony Almonte is known, in particular, for his involvement in pieces written by the American Roy Davis Jr., Kemetic Just from San Francisco, Miguel Graça from Portugal, Canadian house sensation Fred Everything, Rise Ashen, and the master of groove Trevor Walker. His performances have lead him to collaborate on records and compilations undeTony Almonter several labels, notably: EMI Boston, Bombay Records (Vancouver), Pronto Musique, Guidance Records, Nordic Trax, Kinkysweet, Fossilfuel Records and more…

Over the years Tony has shared the bill with some of music’s most cutting edge acts and globally renowned names in the electro scene, namely: Joe Claussel, Peven Everet, Roy Davis jr., Tokyo’s UFO, Jazzanova, Rainer Truby, Talvin Singh, Llorca, St-Germain, Louis Vega, Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, King Britt, Andrea Parker, Banco de Gaïa, dj Heather, Jojoflores, Nav Bhinder and Patrick Dream and many more…

Tony’s biggest accomplishment would clearly be his involvement with CBC Radio One. Working two years, mixing and featuring globally renowned electro-jazz artist on the international circuit and featuring Indie label acts, “Le Mélange des Genres” had two successful seasons, broadcasting to 500 000 listeners weekly. In this context, Tony Almonte remains the first ever DJ to hold a residency on the CBC roster, also first allowed to merge other artist’s work live on air. He is known to be a risk taker, yet acclaimed for getting the job done properly and with respect to the integrity of the original tracks produced.

With the Winter Music Conference fast approaching, I’ve been reading all kinds of hype over some awesome Canadian DJ’s and bands that will be attending. This year Canada is actually hosting its first “Canada loves Miami” party on March 26 at the Shelborne Beach Resort. So, all you Canadians who fled south for the winter… check it out! If you’ve not been exposed to our national talent, please make sure to hit this event because the Canadian line-up is really hot: Jojoflores, Fred Everything, DJ Sneak, Luke Fair, Max Graham, Sultan, Hatiras, Jason Hodges, Jonny White, Nitin, The Roaches, Amalia Leandro, Danny Torrence, Vivie-Ann, My Favorite Robot and many others. Gotsoul is a two-fold company founded by a hip and talented team of musicians, DJ’s and producers, along with specialists in PR and Marketing. As a record label Gotsoul specializes in soulful music and eclectic music. According to them, anything that embodies true soul music can be seen and heard from Gotsoul. As a production company, Gotsoul houses an experienced and serious team in image-making, branding, and event planning.The label has included such awesome artists as Jojoflores, Mike Fresco, Osunlade, Trevor Walker, Rise Ashen, Santos, Jaffa, Miguel Graca, Soulcreation, Kenny Bobien, Fred Everything, Bodhi Satva, Nick Holder, Esperanza, and many more.

Gotsoul will, of course, be attending WMC 2008 and we’ll be right there with them!

Rise Ashen: A Shift Towards Long Term Thinking

Rise AshenMusician, DJ, Remixer, Martial Artist and BBoy Eric Vani (a.k.a. Rise Ashen) has devoted his life to the study of sound and movement. From his early years as a bboy in Montreal in the late 80’s to his studies at Fanshawe College (North America’s Oldest Recording School) and the Banff Centre for the Arts, Eric’s focus has been on applying hi-fi knowhow to underground music. His record collection spans Rai, Ancient Music, Traditional and Popular African, South American and Asian music, with NuJazz as is his primary focus. As a DJ, he blends it all in a worldy mash and is always the sweaty and dynamic life of the party. He has remixed Bebel Gilberto and Duke Ellington, has collaborated with Juno award winner Miguel Graca, Fred Everything, Trevor Walker, Blissom and Teknostep among others and his music has appeared on the compilations of renowned DJs like Rainer Truby and Roger Sanchez, and has been played by the likes of Masters at Work, Gilles Peterson, Maurice Fulton, Bonobo, ODB, Jimpster and Ted Patterson. You can check out his releases on Afroart, Gotsoul, Dub Fu and Defected among many others (he has about 35 12-inches out now and 7 artist CDs, not to mention countless mixed CDs and a few CBC radio shows called A Nu Jazz Order).

He believes music and dance are essential to human culture and that united, artists can lead humanity towards a more enlightened way of living.

Fred Everything: True house for true Ottawa heads

How do you write about something as fun and fresh as the beats and breaks of Montreal star DJ Fred Everything? Well, for some inspiration I visited his Myspace and cranked up sample beats he had available. I went from casual head bob to full on purse-lipped, hip-waggling, seat dancing in seconds! His style, while planted firmly in the deep house genre, definitely draws from an array of influences from disco to funk and soul.

Although he’s known for his remixing, his non-mix debut, 2000’s Under The Sun, was a huge success with critics and fans alike and he has appeared on more than 100 compilations worldwide. Fred Everything has remixed popular artists such as KemeticJust, Random Factor, AtJazz, Joeski, Bran Van 3000 and Roy Davis Jr.’s classic track “Watch Them Come”. But, by far, one of the coolest things I found out when trying to get the scoop on Fred Everything is that his record label, Lazy Days Recordings, throws a monthly party at one of my favourite Montreal hangouts le Salon Daomé. This place is super chill– it looks and feels like an apartment but it’s a musical civil uprising at night (and a working studio during the day, believe it or not).

Fred Everything gets a huge thumbs up from me but hey, if you need more convincing pick up an album or two or, better yet, check him out live at a musical civil uprising near you (or, you know, follow him from venue to venue, city to city until you run out of gas or you burn out the soles of your dancing shoes):
