Meaghan Blanchard is a 19 year old singer/songwriter from Hunter River PEI. Her passion is music. She will enter her third year at the University of Prince Edward Island this fall and has been performing since she was very young in front of school, church and community benefit concert audiences, graduating to all ages shows and coffee houses in high school and now to concert venues, bars, and restaurants. She is set to release her very first album “Changing Things”. The official CD launch will take place at the Guild on September 12th. The album was recorded in Charlottetown at Big Grey Sound Studios. It was produced by John Connolly and engineered by Jon Matthews. Mastering was handled by Paul Milner.

Meaghan began writing songs at 14 just after she took up the guitar which has become her instrument of choice. She plays both acoustic and electric and tries her hand at piano as well.

Meaghan was selected to showcase not once but twice on the Music PEI stage during ECMA 2008 in Fredericton in acknowledgement of her talents both as a performer and a songwriter. She has played numerous all ages shows, coffee houses and community benefits as she continues to develop her skills and talents. Meaghan is also be featured in a pod cast series produced by Sandbar Music featuring 15 of the best songwriters from PEI that is now available on line for download and listening at www.closetothecoastradio.com.

When you listen to Meaghan, you are struck by her powerful but controlled voice and her ability to sing her material with total commitment. In her songwriting you will also notice a maturity beyond her years. She writes songs that connect to listeners much older than herself which is a rare gift in one so young.

The stairwell in the family home is still where you can find Meaghan playing her guitar and singing for hours whenever she is home from school. It is the place where Meaghan has found the acoustic sound that lends itself perfectly to her voice. It is where the music of Meaghan Blanchard is shaped and sculpted before it is heard in public.

One thing is for certain Meaghan Blanchard is a singer/songwriter with a bright future. Her stage presence, her voice and the songs she writes tell anyone who listens that they will be hearing much more from her sooner rather than later.

“Soaring melodies, intricate riffs, skull-crushing drums.” “An assault of oddly precise, off-kilter grooves bathed in swirling, psychedelic guitars, undeniable hooks and delivered with intensity and conviction.” This is how Glory Glory Man United describe themselves.

Spawned from Atlantic Canada’s own axis of evil – Wolfville NS, Pictou NS and Richmond PE – Glory Glory Man United are a Halifax, Nova Scotia – based pop-trio-cum-noise outfit. GGMU [Adam Warren (vocals, guitar), Ryan Brown (drums, vocals), Gavin Maclean (bass, vocals)] approach music in a post-9/11 world with optimism, while singing about life, love, and the broad attempts by some to crush both. Attempts at writing catchy, treasonous pop songs that rest alongside the Lennon/McCartney canon yield a sound resembling Bloc Party and the Wooden Stars being filtered through Refused, The Flaming Lips and probably way too much late 90’s skate punk.

Active since late 2005, the band have gigged all over Atlantic Canada, to general acclaim, sharing bills with the likes of Grand Theft Bus, Jon Epworth and The Improvements, Share, Great Plains, Shelter With Thieves and Carmen Townsend. They have two EP’s under their collective belt, their now out-of-print but digitally available self-titled debut [2007, Textbook Records], and “Friends of the Seen,” [2008, From Here To There Records], produced by local rock god Jon Epworth.

Taking its name from a religious tract, The Burning Hell has been slithering around in the muck in one form or another since the dawn of the millennium. Fronted by the moderately agoraphobic songwriter and occasional history teacher Mathias Kom on electric ukulele, The Burning Hell currently features between one and twelve people, depending on the night.

The variable lineup promises a very different show every time: sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, sometimes rock, sometimes roll. Always folk, never anti. Quirky? Maybe. Cute? Never.

The latest Burning Hell album, ‘Happy Birthday’, celebrates the beauty of age, the joys of decay, the possibility of dating after death, and the inevitable repetition of mistakes. Combining happy little melodies and depressing Old World fatalism, the music of The Burning Hell is sure to make you smile and want to give up.

Arriving fully formed, Brent Randall & His Pinecones released the expertly crafted debut EP, Quite Precisely, in late 2004 (Charting 34 on Earshot). The seven songs on the album showed a style of song and depth in writing rarely seen since Brill Building era pop. Randall quickly became a enigmatic yet renowned character throughout the East Coast. Along with His Pinecones, made up of Laura Peek, David Ewenson, Joel Goguen, Brian O’Reilly and Jess Lewis, he played several legendary shows in the years that followed, previewing new songs from an ever forthcoming LP that never seemed to materialize.

Four years later, and the wait is finally over. From the first listen of “Strange Love (Don’t Be Lazy),” it’s apparent that the time spent honing the songs on We Were Strangers in Paddington Green was not in vein. The track’s cabaret inspired delivery balances camp and beauty with equal grace. Produced by Jason MacIssac (Jenn Grant, The Heavy Blinkers), the song’s lush sound is reminiscent of peak era Paul McCartney and Harry Nilsson. Randall’s penchant for grandiose arrangements delivered over classic songwriting continues throughout the rest of the album. From the epic chorus of “This House” to the more crestfallen “Slumberjack,” We Were Strangers in Paddington Green never reveals the hand print of its formation. It instead is a beautifully complete document, balancing emotion and sound into one forward striding and backwards looking collection of songs.

A single featuring two songs from this album (Strange Love and This Absence of Mine) has been released online and on vinyl 7 inch. The single has received a lot of attention on CBC radio and campus radio alike. Although the past two years we’re spent recording, Brent has kept busy with the live band. Brent Randall and his Pinecones have completed two national tours in the last year as well as a number of East Coast and Ontario tours. They’ve shared the stage with such acts as Wintersleep, M Ward, The Hylozoists, Two Hours Traffic, The Meligrove Band, Dog Day, and Germans. They were invited to Toronto to record a CBC Radio 3 “In Session” which was also filmed for a one hour program on CBC’s digital tv station, “County Canada.” In 2006 Music Nova Scotia selected him to take part in their high profile private showcase night at Canadian Music Week, they performed at CMW in Toronto opening for the Buttless Chaps and the Halifax Pop Explosion with In Flight Safety and Dog Day. In fact over the past few years Brent has played most of the best alternative music festivals, including Coast to Coast in PEI, Stereophonic in Sackville NB, Pop Montreal in Montreal, Pop Explosion in Halifax, Juno Fest in Halifax, and the QuebecOff in Quebec City.

Finding its home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, what began as a folk duo consisting of guitarist/vocalist Jeremy Gaudet and bassist Richard MacLeod eventually grew into Boxer The Horse with the addition of drummer Andrew Woods and Isaac Neily on guitar and keys. Together for two years, the four almost 20-somethings have been performing around Charlottetown with a few stops in Halifax and a showcase at the 2008 East Coast Music Awards in Fredericton along the way.

After recording a short five song demo, the limited pressing of only 50 copies were quickly nabbed at a Battle of the Bands for 16-year old French exchange students in 2007. They followed it up with their debut EP The Late Show, which they recorded with Adam Gallant at his studio in PEI and released in April 2008. From the Beatles-y opener “Boneyard,” which was featured on PEI’s annual compilation album Well Oiled II, to the upbeat sing-a-long closer “Ohio,” The Late Show is six solid tracks emphasizing the group’s versatility and rich musical influences. Boxer The Horse’s signature mix of classic rock n’ roll and jangly-pop draws on some of music’s biggest names including The Kinks, Bob Dylan, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Strokes and Tom Waits.

Finally old enough to dive into the bar scene, Boxer the Horse has been spotted on stage alongside fellow east coasters Two Hours Traffic, Dog Day, The Museum Pieces and Windom Earle. With their new EP in hand they’ll be out on tour around Atlantic Canada this fall.

Little Foot Long Foot, born out of necessity. This two member Toronto-based band was conceived from a tribute act. Isaac Klein (drums) bought his second tom to bash like Bonham, and Joan Smith (guitar and vocals) did her best to carry off Plant’s feminine machismo without stuffing her pants. After discovering that the smartest business decision for a tribute band is to add as many midgets as possible, Joan accepted her inability to shred wicked solos, strapped on a fat loud guitar and dug out her originals. Isaac put away the second tom so that Joan’s amp would fit in his car, and they journeyed towards a new horizon where White Stripes comparisons were lush and unavoidable.

Being a two piece band is all Little Foot Long Foot has in common with The White Stripes – musically they couldn’t be further apart. Joan’s voice is hard to put to words, there are moments when you can picture her chugging back JD straight from the bottle, channeling Joplin herself. From a light Billie Holiday to a Dylan feel. Be sure to check this Toronto Blues-Rockn’ duo with their injections of sarcastic prose at one of these great venues.
