THE FRAMEWORK formed in late 2006. At barely 3 months old, the band garnered national attention as a result of winning runner-up in the Toronto Mix 99.9’s 2007 RadioStar Songwriting Contest, for the song, “She Thinks I’m Famous”. The combination of buzz from the contest and the band’s catchy synth-rock epics instantly set The Framework up with an extensive online international fan base and sparked the interest of media outlets such as Metro and InsideE Magazine who describes the band’s new record ‘Before Tonight’ as “A confidently cool synth-rock assault that strikes a nonchalant medium between happy pop and stadium rock”. International attention has ensued with the band scoring invites to perform at the coveted Midpoint Music Festival in Cincinnati, packed shows in New York City at the Canal Room and the North by North East music Festival in Toronto (being named one of 5 top acts at NXNE 2007).

His music features sweet melodies, pop-soul choruses and rock chords that make for a great blend of old Cuban and new Canadian influence.

Alex has been a hit both locally and nationally from a young age. When he was 4, he appeared on Cuban national TV playing the claves (a percussion instrument) in a group directed by his music instructor father. His career has brought him close to such people as Roberto Fonseca and Javier Zalba (now with the Buena Vista Social Club), with whom he recorded three albums and toured Europe.

Hope to see you at his show at Nathan Phillips Square on Saturday November 29th.

Jadah, a local Ottawa reggae band, is virtually impossible to find on the Internet. Why? It could be that having a MySpace isn’t the way this reggae band rolls, or maybe Jadah is just waiting for the right time. Ainsley is the lead singer and he’s been doing this for 20 years now. Count on Jadah to provide some great beats Friday November 28th at the Mercury Lounge in Ottawa.

If Matt Bauer’s musical life story or sensational music video (above) doesn’t make you want to hear his beautiful music, I don’t know how else to convince you.

“I love that I’m waking up on a linoleum floor in Albuquerque, my legs tangled up in microphone cords. I love feeling the warmth off a parking lot in L.A. late at night, the air cooling, I’m catching up with my friend Ed, listening to some mixes. I love that I’m playing a show in a sweaty basement in Bushwick hoping the humidity and body heat don’t start to unglue my banjo.

A couple days later I’m recording some vocals at Nigel and Emma’s place in San Francisco. Little Raven’s so big now and she’s talking in full sentences! Nathan and Eva come by and play some music in the kitchen. Eva sounds so sweet singing and playing that giant baritone uke. We talk about birdcalls. I know some birds, but can’t put the sounds to the images. But Nathan’s good at it and teaches me a couple.

Now I’m in Kentucky where I grew up. I’m walking through the places in my songs. Here’s the stable I where Poco slept at night. She’s long gone now and I miss her. Her stall houses a walk-in cooler my mom uses for her flower arranging business. Way out Delong there’s this field where Meg and I lay in the grass and you could feel hoof beats jump up against your chest.

Back in New York, Leaps is coming through town and she’d be perfect to sing this one little part on this one song. We feed the stray cats in the lot around the corner. We talk in funny voices and crack up. We look out over the water from the crumbling cement pier at the end of the street. We head back, we make coffee, we find a harmony, we get it down.

It feels like time travel. This is what I wanted for a long time.

Before, I was pretty lost. Really unhappy. For years. A lot of times I didn’t want to leave my apartment because I felt too self-conscious. I’d do things like take two buses across town to go see a band or go to the ophthalmologist or buy socks only to end up being too nervous to go through the door. Then I’d take the same buses all the way back home. Beat myself up. Wonder why I was like this.

At my lowest, I had almost stopped playing music and it felt horrible. Then I started teaching myself the banjo. It was something I could do everyday that made me feel alive. It led me to all these friends I feel so lucky to have and to a life I could imagine living.

I don’t mean to sound confessional. This isn’t a sad story. I’m telling you this because I thought my story was over, and it hadn’t even started yet. I’m telling you this because they asked me to say something about my music and I guess what’s worth saying is this:

Music saved my life, and so now I go where it takes me. “

Ketch Harbour Wolves hail from across Ontario while fostering a deep connection to Nova Scotia where in 2003 the band’s predecessor, The Flying Buttresses, was forged in the small coastal town of Ketch Harbour. After almost two years of intense musical experimentation, near destitution, and enough stories for a lifetime of songs, singer Jonathan Tyrrell and drummer Brian Urbanik packed their van and drove the seventeen-hundred kilometres home to Ontario. It was back on familiar ground that they would begin to lay the foundations for what would become Ketch Harbour Wolves.

Tyrrell began by calling on childhood friend and indie rock veteran Scott Winter to join them on bass guitar. It soon became clear that the trio’s musical ambitions far exceeded the capacities of a 3 piece outfit. It wasn’t until 6 months later that the final two pieces of the puzzle would reveal themselves in Rome, Italy, where Tyrrell teamed up with singer songwriter Liam Brown and keyboard/saxophonist Kristjan Bergey for a spontaneous performance in the basement of a Roman bistro. The quintet then came together in the summer of 2006 to play an opening spot in Toronto for east coast favourites Caledonia. After merely two rehearsals, Ketch Harbour Wolves delivered an explosive performance, propelled by a capacity crowd that refused to let them leave the stage. The Wolves were as impressed as the audience – clearly they were on to something.

Taking inspiration from the music of the legendary French jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, Halifax’s Gypsophilia combines hot jazz and European gypsy music, adding their own modern edge and fusing elements of tango, klezmer, funk, and classical in their original music. Admired by listening and dancing audiences young and old, the group’s passionate, exciting and sophisticated sound has quickly catapulted them to unprecedented jazz popularity in Nova Scotia. Not simply a Gypsy-jazz cover band, Gypsophilia’s unique voice comes from the fusion of the members’ diverse musical and artistic backgrounds, as well as from their innovative and eclectic original repertoire. Initially formed for an appearance at the 2004 TD Canada Trust Atlantic Jazz Festival, the band was impressed with the immediate and passionate audience response.

Since then, Gypsophilia has played numerous club shows, private functions, fundraisers and more formal concerts, regularly attracting sold-out crowds. Performance highlights include a series of wildly successful swing dance costume parties (co-produced by JazzEast), and performances at festivals, including the TD Canada Trust Atlantic Jazz Festival (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), the Rimouski FestiJazz International (2006), Fredericton’s Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival (2006) and the Deep Roots Festival in Wolfville (2006). In all of these contexts, Gypsophilia’s efforts to explore new musical ground have been met with great enthusiasm and support from listeners. The band’s most recent project is a debut album of original music, entitled Minor Hope, which was released in May 2007.
