ROMMEL RIBEIRO Live at Mercury Lounge Ottawa

Brazilian music, Afro, reggae, jazz, funk… Nothing is off limits for this incredible artist simply known as Rommel. Born in 1987 in São Luís, Northern Brazil, Rommel was destined to have close connections with music. Raised in a family of musicians, he grew up admiring his grandparents’, father’s and sister’s talents. Precociously gifted, Rommel won his first music festival competition at the age of 14 and since then participated in several other music festivals mainly in his hometown, São Luís.

The Rest play The Casbah (Hamilton), July 25

The Rest’s second album Everyone All At Once has just been released! Here’s what they had to say about it:

For our second record Everyone All At Once we decided to write and arrange the songs in isolation. We drove away from our select cities, A.D.D. distractions, relationships, and most importantly any escape from making music. We brought food, clothes, alcohol, and a van full of instruments. We woke to a lake, a forest, two cozy buildings, and a room full of instruments. We wrote and made noise until the sunset, beat on drums while howling at the moon (alcohol), and fell asleep aware and anxious to repeat the day before…

Max Graham’s newest album Cycles in stores now!

Part one of a preview of Max Graham’s newest album Cycles. Part two available right here.

If you don’t remember Max Graham, be sure to check out our previous profile of him right here!
The art of the DJ is not always about that big main room, peak time, hands in the air experience. One of the most difficult things to master, for any artist, is also the essential craft of warming up the dance floor.

Being able to take a crowd at their very beginning and draw them into the music, step by step, bit by bit increasing the pace and the tempo, the beats and the melody until you have them in the palm of your hand and are unready to unleash the mother of all sets, is something that takes time, practice and an inbuilt ability to read the party. Something that Canadian legend Max Graham has in abundance.
Renowned around the world as a master of both warm-up and main set, Max’s beautifully tempered mixing has an initial delicacy and finesse that builds through into a mind-blowing big time dance floor explosion, giving you exactly what you want from the music before leaving you on a hypnotically euphoric conclusion. Here on his Cycles album, he perfectly demonstrates this concept, giving you the ultimate Max Graham experience across two stunning CDs.

Cory Woodward new album to be released nation wide, July 15th/08

Cory Woodward – Slipping Away

On the surface, you’d think Cory Woodward is too young to be writing the songs he does. He shouldn’t have felt the pain he’s felt; his voice shouldn’t be as worn. No, not at his age. But with his gruff voice and familiar song structure, he seems to have been around for years and destined for hyperbole-filled comparisons to Waits and Springsteen.

Herbie Hancock at Ottawa International Jazz Festival

Herbie Hancock

Confederation Park was the home to legendary Herbie Hancock with his Grammy awarded Album “River: The Joni Letters”. The lyrics from the album “River” were written by Canadian artist Joni Mitchell. Herbie Hancock graced the stage with two fantastic vocalists, Sonya Kitchell and Amy Keys. Sonya Kitchell’s sound is a cross between Norah Jones, Ella Fitzgerald & Joni Mitchell. While Amy Keys a sound not unlike Tina Turner and Christina Aguilera.
There was definitely no lack of genius musical talent last night! Herbie Hancock was accompanied by Dave Holland on Bass, Chris Potter on Saxophone, Vinnie Colaiuta on Percussion and
Lionel Loueke on Guitar.

Tokyo Police Club: Listen to them, support Lupus research

Toronto based band Tokyo Police Club have made their cover of The Rentals’ “Friends Of P” available to stream and download at friendsofp.org. The song was previously only available on the bonus disc to the U.K. version of Elephant Shell, but the band have teamed up with the Lupus Foundation Of America to give more people a chance to hear it. All money raised from donations made on the site will go to lupus research. The first 50 people who donate $15 or more will receive a free “Friends Of P” tote bag.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body attacks and destroys its own tissue and cells. It has no cure, can be fatal, and can damage the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver, skin, lungs, brain and other body parts.

Tokyo Police Club recently remixed The Coast’s “Tightrope” for a seven-inch single that’s out now on Toronto’s Magnificent Sevens Records. Click here for Tokyo Police Club’s July Canadian festival dates!

The Best of NXNE: Summerside

Summerside

Caught these guys sort of by accident while walking through Yonge-Dundas Square on Thursday on my way to see Sabrina Korva, Stand, and David Martel play at Sunrise Records.

They certainly caught my attention with their rockin’ guitar licks and the massive crowd that had gathered to watch them play.
