The story behind the Montreal-based electropop duo begins with a pair of highschool sweethearts and spans a decade of couplehood, musical projects and everything in between. 2005 saw the release of their debut album Goodbye Friend, Welcome Lover on Noise Factory Records, the first full-length effort Edmund and Heidi had ever attempted. There were no distractions, just the two of them in their apartment strumming guitars, singing songs, turning knobs and pressing record.

137 Niagara could be called the house that rock built, not only because the three members of Off the International Radar who lived there filled its nooks and crannies with droney space rock and projected weirdly lit images onto the sweat soaked basement walls during crammed house parties but also because on moving day, after they removed the final piece of musical equipment from the basement, the entire back wall collapsed. Apparently the Farfisa organ was load-bearing.

Contrived is a 5 piece rock band with principal members from Wintersleep and Holy Fuck. Lending a hand at the mix is Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Super Furry Animals). Tight, pulsing rhythms and a tapestry of guitars lay the foundation for warm and welcoming vocal melodies.
Their new cd blank, blank, blank will be released October 28th, 2008.
Brian Borcherdt’s newest album, Coyotes, was recorded by his long time friend (and one of my all-time personal favourite artist) Jose Contreras of the super mega awesome band By Divine Right. While on a break from Holy Fuck’s tour schedule Brian performed a handful of recently written songs in Jose’s living room. Little else was added to the guitar and vocal, maintaining the songs’ intimate and delicate atmosphere. The album’s textural paper sleeve features original artwork by James Mejia, perfectly complimenting the haunting tone of these seven songs.

“Blues for people who hate blues,” as I’ve praised before. They distill rock ‘n’ roll, punk and country into their heady house-rockin’ punch. Give them a stage, any stage and they’ll put on the best show they can for whoever’s there. Each one is a seasoned pro on their instrument of choice but, never afraid to take chances, the boys are fond of switching it up in an on-stage game of musical chairs. To quote a much used and abused cliche, The Perpetrators have to be seen to be believed.
So go see them!
Julie Ann Bertram has posted her first and second albums, Jab and Ecstatic Songs respectively, on her website. She’s a fantastic musician, as I’ve mentioned before, so be sure to check out the albums while you can!

An inimitable stalwart of the Toronto music scene, Nick Zubeck is a versatile and accomplished guitarist, producer, and multi-intrumentalist whose talents have led him to play with Great Lake Swimmers (briefly, on bass), The Lavender Gloom (now defunct), Polmo Polpo (guitar and lap steel), and Barzin (currently). As a songwriter, he has released two albums under his own name (2002’s “A Meek Spectacle” and 2003’s “Hiding Out and Laying Low”), both of which were marked by his unequaled use of lush delicately-layered textures and unconventional song structures.
